We have a 69 RS camaro convertable with a 350 engine and super glide auto trans with 77000 original miles. It will always start from an overnight stop but if we run around and shut it off we have a 50/50 chance of starting back up if it is off for less than an hour. We have had the starter rebuilt and selenoid replaced. We have been told it may be the key ignition or shifter problems. How do I test these for the problem?

When this problem occurs, does the motor turn over, but not start? If so, then your problem could very well be electrical or possibly fuel. If heat is excessive under the hood or a fuel line is routed near the exhaust. You could be experiencing vapor lock in the fuel line, fuel pump or carburetor. If the engine starts after sitting for a period of time, then I would check out the fuel system and rule it out before suspecting the electrical system.

If your motor does not turn over, then your problem is the solenoid is becoming over heated. If the car sits for a period of time, does it turn over and start then? If it does, then it is very likely heat is effecting your solenoid. If you have headers, the additional heat given off by them or that the header’s collector pipe come very close to solenoid, heating it up more then normal. One possible solution is to purchase a heat shield for your starter/solenoid. A better solution is to purchase a remote solenoid or kit to relocate the solenoid to a location away from a heat source. Usually, the relocated solenoid is mounted to the passenger side wheel well or firewall.

GM Starters are known for beating the bushing holding the back of the armature egg shaped.. Spring for a mini starter, the best move you'll ever make.
