The light will have a red and black wire clamp, and a square thing. Hook the red and black ones to the battery, the square thing to the #1 spark plug wire (drivers side front)
Pull the vacaum hose off the can on the distributor and plug it, with a bolt or whatever to prevent vacuum leaks.
Locate the timing tab, it's attached to the front cover, down by the lower pulley, clean it up so you can read the numbers, sometime rubbing some white chalk on it helps. If you see the line in the balancer, clean that up too.
Start the car, pull the trigger on the light, and aim it at the timing tab.
You'll see the line on the balancer at a single stationary point somewhere on the timing tab, just read the timing off the tab. Most are graduated from 12 degrees advanced to 4 degrees retarded.
When you rev the motor, the balancer line should move, clear off the tab quite a ways in the advanced direction. If your timing light is a "dialback" type, you can hold the rpm's up (at maximum advance) and turn the dail till it reads on the ZERO on the tab, and read your total advance off the dial on the light.
If you need to adjust it, loosen the bolt holding the distributor down slightly and turn the distributor. The vac canister toward the carb will advance it more.
Donīt forget to plug the distr hose back again!! |
